Happy New Year - Happy New Books!

It's with a heavy heart that my first editions of Forbidden Secrets have gone off the market.   Just six months ago I was so happy to see Ursa and Leo out in the world and now they are gone.  It seemed like I was just getting readers into the world.  I hope if you are one of those readers that you'll hold on for a few months!

Not to fear though! Lies that Blind: SpiritBeasts, book 1 will be coming in July, 2016!  I know it's a bit to wait, but I swear it's worth it.

I am also happy to announce that I'm working on several additional books and so far the new year has been full of adventures and I haven't even gotten out of my PJs!  Okay, that's a lie, I had a bubble bath earlier.

Alright, enough over-share!  As soon as I have a cover made for the LIes that Blind, the first SpiritBeasts book, I will display it for all to see!

Happy 2017!

A tales of loss and victory

In October, I was told my publisher, Ellora’s Cave, was closing their doors.

As a newly published author, I was pretty crushed.  I had a contract for eight books and only six of them were edited and only four of those were released at the time. While I could get my rights back, I was looking at starting all over again with rejections and the whole thing.  I adore my editor and my cover artist and they were losing their jobs too!  The whole situation was just bad.

My family had been circling like vultures just waiting for something bad to happen and here it was.  Even though it was no fault of mine, I carried the weight that I’d done something wrong. It felt as though I’d personally driven the publisher out of business.

I only told my husband and a couple close friends what happened. Then I wallowed in a pit of despair for about a week.  I did some soul-searching and I threw myself back into writing. My cover artist and then my editor contacted me.  All was no lost. I could self-publish!

I finished two more books while the rights for two of the unpublished contracted books returned to me.  I submitted one of those books to an agent and was rejected right away. I submitted in a contest through twitter and got rejected by several editors there.  Good times.

When I reached out to my cover artist, she gave me the contact for a publisher she does freelance work for.  Long and short of the back and forth, I signed and sent my contracts to Torrid this morning for three of the books!  It’s a step in the right direction! Frankie and Christopher and Rev'Dawn and Nina have a home!  Yay!

I think that this craziness that we call writing is a trial by fire.  It is not easy.  There are a series of hoops to jump through all the time.  I don’t know how other people handle rejection but I suck at it.  I realize that the worst part is being told ‘NO’. For those people who are writing and wrestling with their muse, keep at it.  Each step is a building block to the next step.  Your stories are important and should be read!

Fitting right?  Oh Leo, and your cute little pointy goatee!  There is a bit of a chin strap here too, but minimal.  I really like how stylish and groomed this one looks.

Anyway, here is today's entry!  I can't wait to see what you come up with.  See below for extra shots!

30 Days of Movember

Happy Movember 1!  (For more information *savages*, check out this link

Here is the team I donate to and follow! You can even join this team, another one, or make up a team yourself. (Maybe next year we will move into the team round. We'll see!)

I'm kicking off my Movember #PessimisticMoustache game with my favorite and the man who hung on my auntie's bedroom wall when I was growing up. (Yes, I am old.  But not so old that I had one myself.)

Not only does Tom Selleck have a stylish stashe but he is hairy as a damn bear.  What's not to like?  College humor even has a mustache style named specifically for his upper lip fuzz.  This is not the creepy solo-stache that haunts us from the 70's and 80's, he is a bar above

I mean, just have a look. Simple but trimmed and neat.

A Movember-man could really do worse than picking this style after the 30 day growth if you decide to keep i

This might have been one of the poster's my aunt had.  Actually, now that I think about it, he might have been leaning over that bad-ass Ferrari.

Regardless, lets just have a moment to admire the chest hair, okay?  Unless you're pro-shave and then just continue your way down. No judgement.

It is a sad thing that most guys have to shave, wax and repeat these days.

We are so accustomed to seeing Magnum PI (Or Frank Reagan for you Blue Bloods fans) with a mustache that he looks weird without one.  I mean, borderline untrustworthy.   Still a cutie, but I might not let him babysit, that's all I'm saying.

Update and new stuff!

So, I had a release party for Taming the Brat last night.  It was rather lackluster I'm afraid.  I obviously didn't do proper follow through with letting people know it was happening.  I am still getting a hang of this marketing beast.  It was a lot more fun when I was putting stories up and people were finding them and reaching out asking for more.

I don't like bugging people but obviously I need to let people know what's going on and when things will be released.

So, in the spirit of trying to get ahead of the train, on Sept 28, Blood Feathers is coming out!  I'll be giving away 10 copies of the ebook on the release date to those who turn out either on my facebook author page or on spiritbeast.org.   There's a nice chat feature there.  6:00pm- 7:00pm PST.

So, go on over and get yourself signed up for the event.  You know you wanna.

For those people who have been reading before the books were published, I am working on an Alexander story.  :D  I got myself pinned into extra days of the real job so my creative hours are still limited.  My hope is to have it finished by the end of the month!

Thanks for the support everyone who has reached out and continued to follow me and track down what's going on with the stories!

The Eagle Huntress

Not shocking if you're reading my books that I have a thing about winged-things.  When I saw the preview for Eagle Huntress I got really excited about a chance to learn more about this culture that has interested me for many years.  I'm all about girl-power too so of course I want to hear about a young girl getting her eagle training.  Here's the preview.

You Tube Trailer

Good stuff right?  Absolutely beautiful and just look at those wings. ;)  (Don't judge me!)

I shared the trailer around tweet-space and called it good.  This morning I got a nice tweet from  Adrienne Mayor  @amayor who shared this document with me and some others.  It's a clarifying view about the women in the community.

Document

Knowledge is power.  Thanks to Adrienne Mayor for this enlightening document and I'm happy to share it around.   I am still going to see the movie but will view it as it was intended - a dramatization.

Life Lessons

Last year we went to Santa Cruz for a family reunion and I was deep in my story-research mode and took a bunch of pictures of surfers out in the water.   I was mostly randomly snapping pictures of the ocean full of surfers without any real focus.

When I got home I found this one.  I love that this little girl is getting some early surf training.

Sadly it's not in very good focus.  Look at the little surfer catching her wave!

Taming the Brat and Blood Feathers

Got the update that Taming the Brat is going to be out on September 7, 2016.   Blood Feathers will be available on September 28, 2016!

Taming the Brat has about 4,000 extra words in a new scene thanks to the encouragement of my editor.  So, people who read the freebies will have something to look forward to!   I love the covers so much and I'm delighted to get to share these with everyone. You can even click on through to read the blurb and Excerpt and all the deliciousness!

What airline are you going to fly?

The past two weeks I’ve been doing a little bit of travel.  I only get about a once a year out of state trip usually so this two-fer was unusual for me.  Husband flies about 4-6 times a year minimum. I decided to try something a little different.  Usually we fly Virgin America.  We’ve had horrible experiences with South West (they love to cancel a flight right out from under you and over-book.)  and Continental (a story for a longer blog post than this.)

The last two times we’ve flown out of New York with Virgin the plane was very hot and the staff clearly wanted to be anywhere but serving a bunch of worthless travelers.  Last time they had tunafish on the menu. If you think your co-worker heating up fish in the lunch room is bad, imagine smelling tuna on a hot plane for 5+ hours. Yucko!

Hey, I get it, the job is hard but I’m paying for a service.  I can give my money to anyone!  Virgin isn’t the only plane in the sky!  That’s why this time I decided we would fly different airlines and try different seat-types to see who we really liked more and give Virgin some competition!

I flew from the little pea-sized airport here in town to Seattle on Alaska (coach).  Alaska for me was fine. Mostly because I have no legs to speak of and the flight was so short. Even though it was coach the attendant came by several times offering cookie-snacks and drinks. I rather like the tiny planes too, you can really feel everything! It’s as close as I’ll get to real flight.  It doesn’t hurt that our cute little Snoopy Airport is the cutest airport in the whole world.  It’s a very stress-free-TSA experience.

My hubby followed me to Seattle a few days later on Delta out of San Francisco. (Main Cabin Select wanna-be)  Husband said the attendant was even less friendly than our Virgin America folks.  Also they did a strange roll-call requesting to see tickets after everyone was in their seat.  The size of the Main Cabin Select seats were not spacious and the snack offering were poor. The complimentary drink promoted for this seat selection was not offered in flight.  A delay in the flight was not the airlines fault but unlike Virgin, they did not explain the reason for the delays or provide good communication.

We flew from Seattle to New York through American Airlines, first class.  It didn’t meet my expectations. We were offered water on take-off, not even offered soda/juice/coffee, certainly no booze.  The meal was packaged crackers/bread and slabs of three cheeses and some seeded red grapes.  We were offering a beverage with the meal. The attendant cleared our trash, offered a refill and then vanished.  It wasn’t until breakfast was served, packaged muffin and yogurt with granola, that he offered another drink. At the time I was thinking ‘well, maybe first class is just extra leg room’, which my 4’10 self has no need for. My knees don’t ever hit the seat in the tightest coach flight.  Hubby though, 6’2 found the chair very uncomfortable and couldn’t get comfortable enough to nap.  The drop-down TV played mostly promotional commercials and the one-size-fits-all single movie (My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2).

I felt really cheated.  In Virgin coach, I can get drinks anytime I want. Sure, I have to pay for booze but even if I buy 10 at 15 bucks a pop that’s an extra $150.  I can buy a better meal at $25 and watch two movies of my choice at about $25 – So far I’m only at $200’ish and I’m stinking drunk and I’ve seen two movies I want and have someone attending me and eat better quality food that doesn’t take like plastic.  Better yet, I would pay far less for my ticket than the ‘first class’ American Airlines offers. While the attendant wasn’t rude, he didn’t attend.

On the way home we flew Virgin America, first class.  Now this is way more than I expected.  Cozy seats with electric adjustments for legs and recline.  There was even more room for my stumpy legs, my toes couldn’t even touch the seat ahead of me. They provided complimentary eye-covers and ear-plugs and headphones for the movies. Movies! Plural!  Because on Virgin you have your own TV setup where you can pick out what you want to watch.  In coach you pay for them, but in first class you get whatever you want. Like Captain America, Civil War and X-Men Apocalypse and lots of other choices.  (And normal TV and a map of the US so you can see what you’re flying over!) The attendant offered real drinks prior to take off and checked on us through the flight any time our glasses were empty.  The first meal was three courses.  Salad, chicken with greens, mushrooms and mashed potatoes followed by rhubarb crumble. Tasted pretty good actually.   The nuts were mixed nuts rather than peanuts from the American Airlines flight. Towards the middle of the flight we were offered snacks like chips and candies/cookies.

Our attendant was kind, friendly and generous.  Even the other attendants on that flight seemed more bright-eyed and smiling.  I didn’t see a single laser scowl.

So, overall, despite the grumpy, sometimes snarky flight attendants on Virgin, I think they are providing a superior product.  Clearly they are the brand to try to beat for the other airlines.

I am open to other opinions though.  Am I being too harsh?  Are we slaves to what the majority of airlines put us through?  (Isn't TSA bad enough?) Should we try to fly a different airline than the ones listed?  Come on competitors!  Get on your A-game here!

Noreetuh - New York, Summer 2016

Once or twice a year my husband makes the trip to New York where he tends all the IT and phone systems for Per Se and Bouchon and their supporting office.  I try to tag along with him as often as I can totourist and grow ideas/plots or write.  I’m rather fond of the trips as they were the reason I came up with Frankie.  Talking with some of the chefs in New York who have gone to Yountville for cross-training and their culture shock, I couldn’t help but want to create some city characters and toss them into my version of Yountville.

This is my first year in New York when there’s not a blizzard.  Oh no, it’s steamy hot this time of year.  Not nearly as bad as Alabama in August but not the comfortable dry-heat of home either.  Last time we visited, during the big snow storm, we were going to stop by Noreetuh but the bad weather and cold kept us closer to our hotel. (Yes yes, I have fragile California skin.) The three co-owners used to work at Per Se and hubby wanted to stop in and say hi and he’d heard great reviews from co-workers.

I thought it was going to be more of a Japanese fusion food and was delighted that it’s more of a Hawaiian fusion cuisine.  So we decided to try three different courses between us so we could trade dishes and wines.

I am not a food snob. In fact, it is quite embarrassing for me at times when we attend highbrow/holiday events at TKRG.  I mean, I like food and I like wine but do I have a refined pallet? I don’t really think so.  So I pretend.  A lot.

I’m not giving a bite by bite account of the meal but it was amazing.  The Big-Eye Tuna Poke with Macadamia nuts, pickled jalapeños, with seaweed was paired with a Grüner Veltliner; an Austrian white wine.  Oh, this might not be anything to you other foodies out there, but as a writer who has a character who is Hawaiian and Austrian; it was kind of a dorky-geek moment for me.

Yes, the rest of the meal was fantastic too!   Here are the rest of our shared dishes.

Pork-cheek pot stickers with spicy kimchi sauce.

Hawaiian Hearts of Palm, Hazelnuts, orange, pecorino Romano

Mentaiko Spaghetti, Smoked butterfish, aonori, chili

Mochi-crusted Black Bass, Pole beans, Chinese bacon, fermented black bean

Bruléed Hawaiian Pineapple (With the fruit fresh from the islands!)

And Chocolate Haupia Sundae

What I loved about this meal is I felt comfortable.  A good tasting meal with fantastic customer service and I didn’t feel like a wanna-be even once.

I'm the girl who takes pictures of her friggen food now. Great!

GoodReads

Thank you for taking the time to read over this promotional post.  I will try not to do it too much here on the site.  I just get really excited and want to share with everyone!

Happy New Year! 2016 Edition

I didn't do such a good job keeping up with the blog on the site.   I plan to do better this coming year.

I haven't wanted to post much here because I'm re-working my story and it's been a little stalled lately.  I've also been writing a lot more erotica/romance and post it on a different site as well.  This is not a very efficient way to keep in touch with readers though.

So, I'm thinking of starting up an 'adult' section on this site where I can put my stories involving those erotica/romance characters and have it up.

On the other hand, do I want everyone to see into my naughty mind?

Hope you're having a wonderful New Year so far!  Lets get this thing rolling!

Shall we begin?

I have been debating on having my blog here or elsewhere.  I really like having the ability to drive people to this site and to introduce them to the characters and answer questions people might have.  On the flip side, I want to keep this as a story-only site so I'm balanced strangely on the middle ground.  I'm going to try to see if this blog will work for both.

If you are interested in signing up for the blog, please send me an email and I will get you added.!  Thank you for stopping by and having patience while I play around with this.
